
Within the City of Hull a cluster of more than 300 businesses is involved
in freight, port operations, haulage, shipping, warehousing, marine engineering,
logistics and ship supply. Hull City Council’s Development and Renewal
Services has a primary objective of attracting new business and investment to
the City by developing and marketing the unique position of the facilities of
the port of Hull and the companies that operate within the region.
Indeed,
in response to the ODPM’s Northern Way Initiative to bridge the £30b productivity gap between the North and South, Hull City Council has taken the lead in the Hull and Humber Ports City Region Development Programme. Its aim is to create a ‘Global Gateway’ with a thriving, outward looking sustainable economy building on the unique assets of location, the estuary, ports connectivity and physical environment.
This initiative is supported by the public and private sector partners of the Humber Trade Zone whose vision is to develop and market a stronger national and international awareness of the Humber ports and establish the region as a truly global player in the world wide ports and logistics industry.
Team Humber Marine Alliance (THMA)
is a private/public
sector partnership made up of key Humber based private sector companies
involved in ship building/ship repair and associated marine and
engineering activities. THMA has a membership of over 40 companies,
with a combined turnover of £140m employing in the region of 1600 people.
THMA objectives are to:-
- To interface with the needs of the industry, locally, nationally
and globally by assembling supply chains and forming capability
groupings in a flexible and cost effective manner
- To increase the flow of business opportunities to members by
stimulating collaboration and co-operation within the membership
to attract major sub
contract work from outside the region
- To co-ordinate views and represent the members’ collective
interests in general discussions with government bodies, local
authorities, other regional, national and international associations.

Training and Skills
A comprehensive training and skills programme has been established to support the thriving maritime sector,.
Hull Tec
Hull City Council's engineering training centre 'Hull Tec' delivers apprenticeships in engineering: fabrication and welding and mechanical and marine engineering. The programme has been so successful that centre is expanding to a second site on Orchard Park which will deliver Advanced Apprenticeships up to NVQ level four. Apprentices have access to computer programming and Cad/Cam training. Hull Tec trains approximately 130 apprentices per year a number of which are recruited by THMA members as well as general engineering companies within the region.

Team Humber
at Hull College is the lead partner in the Ports & Logistics Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE). The aim of the CoVE is to encourage participation in, and the development of, lifelong learning in the Ports & Logistics Sector in the Humber sub region. Team Humber opened the first of three Ports & Logistics CoVE Training Centres in Hull in 2005. The centre will provide high class training facilities for port and logistics employees that can be accessed in or near the workplace and at times convenient for employers and has facilitated port employees to train as NVQ assessors, plant and equipment instructors and adult teachers.
Logistics Institute
The University of Hull Logistics Institute offers a range of specialist programmes from MSC Logistics and Supply Chain Management to a range of global logistics themes, undergraduate programmes and short courses.
